Ripley sits directly on the Ohio River, backed by steep, rolling hills and bluffs that define how land clearing has to be done here. Where the river has cut into the valley wall over time, the resulting slopes are capped by resistant limestone over softer shale — terrain that holds up fine under tree cover but can be prone to erosion or slippage once that cover is removed without a plan.
That’s the starting point. What comes after it is where local knowledge matters.
Clearing a bluff-side or hillside lot near Ripley isn’t the same job as clearing a flat upland parcel back from the river. Slope stability, runoff direction, and root systems holding soil in place all have to factor into the approach — clear it wrong and you’re not just left with stumps, you’re left with a bank that moves.
Along U.S. Route 52 and throughout Brown County, we’ve cleared land for new construction, riverfront properties, and rural acreage on terrain that ranges from level ground to steep bluff.
S&S Construction Services LLC has worked this ground across Brown County for years. We clear with the slope in mind, not just the trees on it.

From residential projects to commercial developments, we provide end-to-end solutions for every stage of construction.
Clearing land above the Ohio River starts with understanding the slope — not just clearing what’s growing on it.
Site assessment comes first. We evaluate terrain, slope grade, tree density, and drainage patterns specific to the property before equipment moves in. On bluff or hillside lots, what looks like a simple wooded parcel can carry real erosion risk once the vegetation holding the slope is gone.
From there, we clear to the scope of the project — full clearing for construction, selective clearing to preserve slope stability, or brush removal for a specific footprint — using equipment and a sequence suited to the grade.
Stump grinding and root removal follow, handled with attention to what’s still needed to hold soil on steeper sections. Debris is managed on-site, and where slope stability is a concern, we plan the clearing sequence to limit exposed, bare ground at any one time.
We finish with a site walkthrough to confirm the cleared land is stable and ready for its next phase.
A property owner near Ripley along Route 52 needed a wooded bluff-adjacent lot cleared for a new home site. We assessed slope and drainage before clearing, cleared selectively to limit exposed ground near the bank, and ground stumps without disturbing the surrounding slope. The lot was construction-ready with no erosion issues during the following rainy season.
A landowner in Brown County needed a section of overgrown upland acreage cleared for future use. We cleared trees and brush to the agreed footprint, ground stumps below grade, and managed debris on-site while leaving a buffer of trees along a drainage path per the owner’s request. The land was ready for its next phase within the agreed timeline.

It can if it’s done without a plan. We assess slope and drainage before clearing and sequence the work to limit exposed ground, protecting slope stability on bluff and hillside lots.
Depends on terrain, tree density, and what’s included — clearing only, or stump grinding and debris removal too. We quote after assessing the site.
Both. We grind stumps and manage debris as part of the same project, so the land is actually usable when we’re done.
Yes. We handle riverfront and bluff-adjacent clearing as well as flat upland parcels across Ripley and Brown County.
Yes. We work from your specifications, including preserving tree buffers along slopes or drainage paths where needed for stability.
